Ariel Atom 500 V8 Development

1 June 2010 No Comment

Being the Motor enthusiasts we are, you would imagine that a Lotus Exige has probably the best power to weight ratio right. Well that what we thought at least until we found out about the new beefy Ariel Atom.

The Ariel Atom 3 sprints from 0 to 100 Kph in under 3 seconds and can hit 160 Kph in under 7 seconds, can you say fast! With figures like that who would need more power. But the guys at Ariel Motor Company decided to develop a super special project for the ultimate performance, partnering with RS Developments back in 2007. The Ariel Atom 500 V8 was born. The car uses the same signature exposed-chassis-exoskeleton sans roof and windows but throws in a monster V8  power plant.

Ariel decided to use the Russell Savory 2.4-liter V8 engine with 500 HP at a mind blowing 10,000 rpm featuring alloy construction and a dry sump. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 6 speed sequential box with flat shift capability and paddle controls. A manual override along with launch and traction control will be offered. Other distinguished features include Dymag magnesium wheels, 4 pot caliper brakes, chromemoly aerofoil wishbones and carbon fiber weaved into the rear wing, underbody tray and wheel arches.
What’s most disappointing is only a few lucky individuals will have the opportunity to own the super lightweight V8 roadster with the highest power to weight ratio of any production car. Unfortunately pricing has been released to date on the Ariel Atom 500 V8. But if you’re a V8 owner you might have some idea of the price, we can only imagine it being near the 6 figure mark!
